God Says: Momma Affirmation 1

Today starts my 10 week Momma Affirmation series. In this series I will be digging into some amazing affirmations that God has spoken to us through his word.

Disclaimer: I am not a theologian nor have I studied the art of presenting God’s word correctly, so please understand that these are my thoughts and discernments and very well not be theologically correct.

-I am cultivating a godly heritage in my children-

“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”
~Psalm 127:3

The cool thing about this verse is that it contains two affirmations, so we’ll see this verse again! The thought that I am cultivating a godly heritage in my children is a bit overwhelming to me. I’m prone to anxiety and stress, so this affirmation is stressful to me. I’m overwhelmed that I am tasked with the cultivating this heritage for my child.

Wait, what does that mean?

According to Children Walking Everywhere with Jesus: “Heritage can relate to many things, but for our purpose we will use the Oxford Dictionary definition which in part states; Heritage is ‘Valued qualities and cultural traditions that have been passed down from previous generations’”.

So, what this means to me is that I’m taking the morals and values that God has imparted to me (through my parents, friends, and own study) and passing them on to my children with the prayer that they will then take these things and build off of them. I truly believe that I don’t have all the answers. If there’s something that I believe to be right that is in fact wrong, I hope that God will change my thought process. This also means those morals and values that were passed to me via my parents and their traditions.

For example (a very trivial and non-sensical example): wearing a dress or skirt to church. When I was younger, my mom would dress us in pretty dresses when we went to church. We then grew up and fought the dress or skirt and we were allowed to wear nice school clothes. Now, I wear jeans. In my very personal opinion, God meets us where we are, wearing what we wear.

This example is dumb but I’m not trying to get controversial here. I have many more examples that include closeted racism and bigotry, but for the sake of argument, I won’t be making those claims right now. But I feel like my point came across.

My parents weren’t wrong when they had us dress nicely for church. But I was able to make my own decisions about my walk with Christ. I believe that we need to set a foundation for our children so that they can make these decisions in the future without fail. I definitely credit my relationship with Christ to my parents and their godly influence on my life. Are the perfect? No. But because of the foundation they laid for me I was able to build off of that and worship God the way I feel I should. This is the very foundation of a godly heritage!

My prayer for you and for me is that we can build that foundation, that heritage, for our children so that they can grow in the light, mercy, and grace that God so freely provides us!!

Take today’s affirmation and write it down. Put in on your mirror or in your car or set a reminder on your phone. Walk in the faith that God has everything under control and that he’s given you this godly purpose to raise your children in his love!

I love you and I’m praying for you!!

With Love and Light,
